Fira de Barcelona renews its “Destination Barcelona Biosphere Commitment to Sustainable Tourism” certificate

Fira de Barcelona has renewed its Destination Barcelona Biosphere for Sustainable Tourism certificate, in line with its commitment to sustainability and contribution to promoting responsible, quality tourism in the city. This certificate, which was awarded for the first time in 2020, is promoted by Barcelona City Council and Barcelona Provincial Council in collaboration with the Barcelona Chamber of Commerce and Tourism.

The Destination Barcelona Biosphere Commitment to Sustainable Tourism certificate, endorsed by the international Biosphere certification awarded by the Responsible Tourism Institute, recognises companies that operate in a manner that respects the environment, culture, working conditions, gender equality and social and economic return. Its aim is to turn the city into a sustainable destination, extending good practices to all tourism services, products and facilities.

For the CEO of Fira de Barcelona, Constantí Serrallonga, the renewal of this distinction “reinforces our commitment to contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations for the 2030 Agenda and join efforts to make Barcelona a leading city in the fight against climate change and in sustainable and quality tourism”.

In addition to this certificate, which has already been obtained by more than 664 companies throughout the province of Barcelona, Fira is part of a network of more than 1,100 organisations that make up Barcelona City Council’s Citizen Commitment to Sustainability to make the city more liveable, efficient and sustainable.

Safe Travels, the international health safety seal
The renewal of the Barcelona Biosphere Sustainable Tourism certificate joins the international “Safe Travels” seal that Fira Barcelona has obtained this year for its Covid-19 safety and prevention protocol, drawn up in collaboration with the risk management consultancy Aon and advisement from the Hospital Clínic of Barcelona. It is the world’s first global travel and tourism health safety seal, awarded by the World Travel Tourism Council (WTTC).
