Fira’s management will promote the CCIB’s activity and Barcelona’s standing in the trade fair sector

The decision by Barcelona City Council’s Economy and Finance Committee to approve Fira de Barcelona’s licence for the management of the CCIB (Barcelona International Convention Centre) for a period of 25 years, starting in November 2021, will have a positive impact on the city by developing a comprehensive strategy in the exhibition and congress area and enhancing the international standing and influence of the trade fair institution.
Barcelona, which already occupies an important position in the European trade fair and congress area, will develop a global policy to provide a large platform for events, at a time of great competitiveness between cities. Unifying the management of the three fairgrounds (the Montjuïc, Gran Via and CCIB venues) will enhance their synergies and promotional efforts, as already occurs in other European cities, resulting in greater strength and opportunities for organizers, exhibitors and visitors.
Within a global context, this will contribute to increasing the competitiveness and international dimension of Barcelona and the trade fair institution as a pole of attraction for events, besides generating new opportunities for the productive and social fabric of the territory as a whole. It should be recalled that the activity of the Barcelona trade fair institution generates an annual impact of more than 2,600 billion euros and over 40,000 jobs.
Following yesterday’s definitive approval, Fira de Barcelona will market the CCIB venue for all the activities which take place from November 2021 onwards. The marketing of the premises and the activity on the site are thus fully guaranteed.
Synergies and cooperation
In this regard, the trade fair institution, which values the excellent professional work performed by its personnel, has expressed its commitment to continue relying on them, as well as its willingness to cooperate with the current GL Events teams to maximize their synergies.
Fira de Barcelona has great expertise in the international market and has long-standing experience in organizing and managing major events. Some of those regularly or periodically held on its sites are world leaders in their specialities, including Mobile World Congress, Alimentaria, the European Cardiology Conference, ITMA, Smart City Expo World Congress, IBTM World and so on. Altogether, more than 140 fairs, congresses and corporate events are held each year, bringing together more than 30,000 direct and represented companies and over two million visitors. Similarly, the institution, which manages venues with a gross exhibition area covering around 400,000 m2, is conducting increasing activity abroad with the co-organization of trade fairs and consultancy on trade fair management in several countries in Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa and Asia.
Fira’s management of the CCIB will also contribute to generating new impacts on behalf of the economic and social fabric, especially in the area of El Besòs, where the centre is located, an area undergoing significant development to improve its urban and social conditions.
