Battery & ES Tech Europe discusses the future of batteries and energy storage
The first edition of Battery & Energy Storage Tech Europe will bring together more than a hundred companies, institutions and associations and more than 70 international experts in the field of energy storage and batteries on 8 and 9 September 2026 at Fira de Barcelona’s Gran Via venue. The new congress was created with the aim of promoting innovation, knowledge and collaboration in a strategic sector for industrial competitiveness and the European energy transition.
On 8 and 9 September, Gran Via will become the meeting point for the main European players linked to energy storage and technologies associated with batteries. Organised by Fira de Barcelona, the show was created with the aim of connecting industry, research, public administrations and sectoral entities to discuss the major challenges and opportunities of a strategic area for the continent’s economic future.
In a context marked by the electrification of the economy, the energy transition and the need to strengthen European industrial competitiveness, Battery & Energy Storage Tech Europe is presented as a platform to promote innovation and collaboration between the different agents of an ecosystem in full expansion. Thus, the congress part of the event will bring together more than 70 experts from energy companies, battery manufacturers, technology centres, associations and institutions.
The programme will address some of the main challenges that will condition the growth of an industry that moves around 58,000 million euros and is set to play a central role in the European industrial strategy for the coming decades. Specifically, the agenda will be structured around the following main thematic axes: industrial and emerging applications; BESS (Battery Energy Storage Systems) technologies; recycling and second life; high-performance batteries and new chemistries; next-generation technologies; policy and regulation; and financing.
Beyond large-scale storage, the programme will give space to high-performance applications in sectors such as space, aviation or railways, together with discussions on intelligent battery management, sustainable system design, investment in new chemistries (high-density lithium, sodium-ion, solid state) and the development of a more autonomous and competitive European industry.
Business, institutional and academic profiles
Among the confirmed speakers are Christian Barba, from EDP Renewables; Naim El Chami, from Neoen; Pablo Fernandez-Santos, from Basquevolt; Graeme Purdy, from Ilika; Veeral Hardev, from Blue Current; and Alex Cipolla, from the Volta Foundation.
In terms of institutional representation, Jordi García Brustenga, Secretary of State for Industry of the Government of Spain; José Moisés Martín, Director General of the CDTI; Mikel Irujo, Minister of Industry and Ecological Transition of the Provincial Government of Navarre, and Darío Moreno, Mayor of Sagunto, among other prominent speakers, stand out.
Also participating will be association representatives such as Bozorg Khanbaei, Executive Director of BEPA; Jean Louis Cols, Vice President of Flow Batteries Europe. Simon Steffgen, Industrial Referent of BVES; Nicolas Furio, Head of Innovation at Europe’s Rail Joint Undertaking; Sonja Risteka, Head of the Battery Storage Platform at SolarPower Europe; and Francisco Carranza, member of the supervisory board of Upcell Alliance.
The scientific and technological field will also have a lot of weight in the programme with the participation of experts such as Laura Simonelli, from the ALBA synchrotron; Leire Zubizarreta, from ITE; Óscar Miguel, from CIDETEC; and Pol Torres, from Eurecat. Issues related to innovation management, the application of artificial intelligence to energy and the development of new storage solutions aimed at accelerating the energy transition will also be analysed.
The main players in the sector
The event will have an exhibition area in which more than 50 companies and entities will participate, including companies such as Omron, Monolithic Power Systems, Gamma Technologies, Farnell Global, Relats, Battech, Halide Energy, Alvatek and LiCAP. They will be joined by other organisations interested in sharing technological advances and analysing the evolution of the sector, such as Basquevolt, Acciona, Endesa, Veolia, Naturgy, EDP Renewables, Galp, Neoen, CIC energiGUNE, SolarPower Europe, Alta Renewables, Flow Batteries Europe and Smappee, among others.
Likewise, the first edition of the event will have the support and presence of key entities for the strengthening of the sector, such as the Centre for Technological Development and Innovation (CDTI), the ACCIÓ agency of the Generalitat de Catalunya, as well as IREC, Eurecat, BatteryPlat, BEPA, Batt4EU, CIDETEC Energy Storage, CIIAE, MAV, the Waste Cluster of Catalonia, the CTM Foundation, ALBA, VITO, Upcell Alliance or MICMAB.
In short, the range of organisations present will cover the entire value chain of batteries and energy storage systems. From the processing of strategic raw materials and the development of new materials and manufacturing processes, to equipment for testing and validation, safety solutions, key components or industrial applications linked to electrification.
With this new proposal, Fira de Barcelona adds to its calendar a trade fair specialising in one of the areas with the greatest potential for industrial and technological growth in Europe. Thanks to the combination of commercial exhibition, congress, networking and institutional representation, Battery & Energy Storage Tech Europe aims to consolidate itself as a benchmark forum for connecting industry, research and public administrations, while helping to strengthen Barcelona’s position as a European energy innovation hub.
