Murcia Regional Library Receives the Liber 2026 Award

The Board of Directors of the Spanish Federation of Publishers’ Guilds (FGEE) has awarded the Liber 2026 Prize for the Best Reading Promotion Initiative in Public Libraries to the Murcia Regional Library. The distinction recognises the library’s commitment to bringing books closer to the public through a wide range of programmes aimed at readers of all ages. It also acknowledges the institution’s significant role within the cultural life of the Region of Murcia.

The Murcia Regional Library has established itself as a leading cultural hub thanks to a broad, diverse and dynamic programme of activities designed to encompass a wide spectrum of knowledge and cultural expression. Under the motto “Books and Much More”, the library has developed a programme that extends well beyond lending and reference services, becoming a meeting point for literature, ideas, cinema, journalism, science, history, art, sport and philosophy.

With this approach, the Regional Library has created an extensive series of specialist programmes that have introduced audiences to some of the most prominent figures in Spanish and international cultural life. Among them is The BRMU Canon, a literary series that has welcomed authors including Javier Cercas, Luis Landero, María Dueñas, Paula Bonet, Manuel Vicent, Lucía Solla, Juan Cruz, Fernando Savater, Mónica Ojeda, Andrés Trapiello and Aixa de la Cruz.

The programme also includes Bibliomedia, a series dedicated to journalism, featuring leading professionals such as Rosa Belmonte, Arcadi Espada and Miguel Maldonado. Likewise, Cinema as a Literary Genre has brought together figures including Maribel Verdú, David Trueba, Emma Suárez and José Luis Garci, further strengthening the connection between audiovisual storytelling, writing and cultural reflection.

These initiatives are complemented by activities devoted to science communication, history, art, sport and philosophy, alongside workshops, courses, reading groups and exhibitions. Together, they make the Murcia Regional Library a vibrant, open and participatory space that promotes access to culture from multiple perspectives and for a wide range of audiences.

The award ceremony will take place on 30 September at the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya (MNAC) in Barcelona. The event forms part of the programme of activities of Liber 2026, the International Book Fair, which will be held from 29 September to 1 October at the Gran Via venue of Fira de Barcelona.

During the same ceremony, the Liber 2026 awards for the promotion of reading in the media, the best screen adaptation of a literary work, the Boixareu Ginesta Award for Bookshop of the Year, the recognition of the most distinguished Ibero-American author, and the Liber Tribute Award will also be presented. The names of the recipients will be announced in the coming weeks.
