Fira de Barcelona is a public consortium, with private business management and autonomy, made up of the Catalan Government, the Barcelona City Council and the Official Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Services and Navigation of Barcelona.

These institutions designate the members of the General Council, which is chaired by the Mayor of Barcelona and approves the entity’s general guidelines, budgets, and economic results. The Catalan Government and the Chamber of Commerce hold the two vice-presidencies.

On proposal of the Chamber of Commerce and, in agreement with the other institutions, the Governing Board is appointed, composed of seven or nine entrepreneurs, from which the president is chosen. It guides the strategy and supervises the management of the institution. Both the members of the General Council and the members of the Governing Board are non-remunerated positions.

The Executive Committee, headed by the General Manager, develops and implements the strategic lines and institutional and corporate policies of Fira de Barcelona, designs the commercial action, coordinates the different services and makes proposals aimed at innovation, expansion, promotion and growth of the institution.

Financial results

Despite international uncertainty and several external factors generating instability, Fira de Barcelona closed the 2024 financial year surpassing the €300 million revenue mark, with an EBITDA of €55.5 million and a net profit of almost €23 million.

Beyond the significance of these figures, the 2024 results confirm the institution’s position among Europe’s leading trade show organisations by turnover. It is worth noting that the aforementioned destabilising situations (the war in Ukraine, the conflict in the Gaza Strip, the energy crisis, etc.) did not hinder the organisation, holding or growth of events around the world.

Market-leading revenue performance

In this regard, despite the global context, Fira de Barcelona’s sound management enabled both revenue and margin to increase by 17% in 2024 compared to the previous year.

By business segment, 23% of revenue came from proprietary trade shows, 37% from external events, 31% from congresses and conventions, and 9% from international activity and others.

CCIB and Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya

The contract volume of Fira CCIB continued to grow, both in comparison with the previous year and with the initial budget. Specifically, it closed the year with €46 million in revenue, more than 6% above budget. In terms of margin, the increase was over 9%.

At the end of the year, Fira closed an agreement with the Government of Catalonia to take over the management of the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, starting on 1 January 2025, for a 25-year period, through Fira Circuit S.L., a new whollyowned subsidiary of Fira.

Major events

Fira de Barcelona is a clear example of the continued growth of the European trade show industry. Not only were more events held than initially planned when the annual calendar was set, but they were also larger in scale, more international in reach and marked by a higher level of contracting by organisers.

Regarding propietary events, particular highlights included Alimentaria & Hostelco, the Smart City Expo World Congress, Hispack, the Barcelona Bridal Fashion Week, the Barcelona Wine Week and the Saló de l’Ensenyament (Education Fair), among others.

Events organised by external operators, highlights included MWC Barcelona, ISE, Seafood Global Expo & Seafood Processing Global, Shoptalk Europe and Ibtm World. The calendar also featured major medical congresses such as those of the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO), the European Congress of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ESCMID) and the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS). Additionally, McDonald’s global convention and major technology gatherings such as those of SAP Sapphire and VMware were held.

In summary, the high volume of activity, once again surpassing even the most optimistic forecasts, combined with a stable cost efficiency approach, enabled Fira to achieve its best-ever results.
