Continues to grow with over 350 exhibitors from 22 countries and 120 activities focused on knowledge, training, and networking
Construmat showcases the transformation of construction towards sustainability
From May 20 to 22, Construmat returns as a benchmark trade fair that continues to grow in number of companies, international presence, and scale. The Spanish event highlights technologies, systems, and materials designed to support the transition to more sustainable and efficient construction models. At the same time, this flagship event at Fira de Barcelona will also offer insights and experiences aimed at reducing the sector’s environmental impact, increasing digitalisation, attracting talent, and addressing the housing shortage.
Now in its 24th edition, Construmat—the most representative and cross-cutting event in Spain’s construction industry—will bring together more than 350 exhibitors from 22 countries at Hall 2 of the Gran Via venue. The trade fair expects to exceed 22,000 visitors and is growing by 24% in the number of participating companies and 15% in exhibition space compared to last year.
Xavier Vilajoana, President of Construmat and APCEspaña, noted: “Construmat reflects the profound transformation the sector is undergoing. We want to show that it is possible to build more efficiently and sustainably, combining innovation with traditional trades, while also generating employment, attracting talent, and providing real responses to urgent challenges such as the need for more housing.”
Industry focus and international reach
With a commercial offering centred on sustainability and efficiency, Construmat will showcase the latest innovations in machinery and tools, industrialised construction, walls, structures, façades and roofs, insulation, waterproofing, urban planning and outdoor spaces, design and interior architecture, flooring and cladding, BIM and ICT for design and construction, kitchens, bathrooms, lighting, energy management and generation, installations, enclosures, carpentry, metalwork, and solar protection, among other areas.
Exhibiting companies include Alsina, Technal, K-line, Urbidermis, Jung, Greco Gres, Exlabesa, Deceuninck, Grupo Valverde, Cosentino, Stil Condal, Indalsu, Alufactory, Fischer, PMP, Molins, Saltoki Offsite, Lahyer, Evowall, Tq Tecnol, Renolit, Dakota, Steico, Saloni, KLH, and A. Solanes.
This year, the fair’s international profile has expanded significantly, with 35% of the exhibitors coming from outside Spain. Participating countries and pavilions include France, Germany, Portugal, China, Poland, Belgium, Austria, Morocco, Italy, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Egypt, Andorra, Lithuania, Hungary, and Japan, among others.
Notably, Turkey will be the guest country, represented by around twenty exhibitors—primarily manufacturers of construction materials and machinery. Turkey will also feature prominently in the fair’s programme of activities, sharing success stories and participating in scheduled business meetings with a strong commercial and institutional delegation.
Disruptive startups
The commercial exhibition will also feature 40 startups offering technological solutions aimed at optimising processes, cutting costs, and improving efficiency in construction. Innovations on display will include nanocoatings that enhance material functionality and durability, real-time concrete resistance monitoring sensors, and drone- and 3D-based infrastructure analysis systems. Alongside this area, visitors can attend talks, pitching sessions, and networking opportunities where these emerging companies will present their projects to potential investors, buyers, and partners.
Congress, sessions, and workshops
In parallel, Construmat will host 120 activities, including key sessions at the Sustainable Building Congress. More than 100 national and international speakers will address topics such as affordable social housing, building health and biohabitability, and practical applications of artificial intelligence in architecture, construction, and public works. Keynote speakers include architects David Adjaye, Peris+Toral, Stephen Bates, and Mohammed Adib.
To address Spain’s housing shortage, Construmat has facilitated the meeting of major industry associations to propose a ten-point plan of necessary measures. This document will be presented during the Congress’s opening session and shared with government officials attending the fair.
Roger Bou, Director of Construmat, explained: “The programme has been designed with a practical focus to foster the exchange of ideas and experiences among the wide range of professionals attending the event—enabling them to apply these insights in their daily work.”
Construmat Experience and international case studies
This year marks the launch of Construmat Experience, a new space dedicated to sector-specific conferences and sessions. As a source of inspiration, the programme will include case studies from Morocco, Portugal, Italy, France, and Turkey. Topics will include industrialised construction, low-carbon buildings, regulatory frameworks on energy efficiency, and resilient construction solutions for natural disasters, as well as post-DANA reconstruction strategies.
The event will also expand its offering of workshops, practical demonstrations, and hands-on training sessions covering lighting, thermal insulation, energy efficiency, and the use of wood or straw in construction, as well as smart home technology for enhanced safety, among other topics.
Masterclasses and innovation showcases
Several Masterclasses will be held, certified by the Council for International Accreditation of Architecture & Design (CIAAD). These sessions will explore sustainable lighting design, social sustainability and architectural heritage, and the role of AI in creating more thoughtful and responsive spaces.
Another highlight will be the Rethink exhibition, showcasing materials from Colab, the materials library of the United Arab Emirates, alongside advanced materials curated by IAAC (Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia). Featured innovations will include self-assembling graphene, palm-based plywood, construction waste–derived recycled plastics, and eco-friendly alternatives to cement, wood, and leather.
Side events and partnerships
Construmat will also host guest events such as the Building Services Engineering Summit by the Association of Building Services Consultants (ACI). Additional sessions will be organised by Build Europe (the European Union’s residential developers and builders association), the Union of Mediterranean Architects (UMAR), the Iberian Association of Trenchless Technology (IBSTT), and Spain’s National Association of Renovation and Refurbishment Companies (ANERR), among other key sector bodies.
Talent and awards
Attracting young people, women, and professionals from diverse backgrounds to view construction as an appealing career option remains one of the industry’s main challenges. On May 22, Construmat will hold dedicated sessions on the types of skilled professionals currently in demand and initiatives designed to attract new talent. In collaboration with Barcelona Activa, a dedicated Marketplace will offer professional opportunities.
The fair will conclude with the Construmat Awards for Sustainable and Healthy Architecture. Curated by the Mies van der Rohe Foundation and sponsored by Würth Spain, these awards recognise buildings designed to reduce environmental impact and enhance user wellbeing.
