Construmat Concludes an Edition Marked by the Sustainable Transformation of the Construction Industry

Construmat 2025 closed its 24th edition today at Fira de Barcelona’s Gran Via venue, having welcomed 22,300 visitors and reaffirming its position as the leading showcase for the sector’s transformation, driven by sustainability, industrialization, and technology. The event featured strong attendance and participation from 368 exhibiting companies, 35% of which were international firms from 22 countries.

This year’s edition focused on the ongoing paradigm shift in the construction industry, highlighting industrialized building solutions, more sustainable materials, energy-efficient systems, and the digitalization of project design, monitoring, and management through BIM, Industry 4.0 technologies, and artificial intelligence. Notably, 40 startups—twice as many as last year—presented disruptive solutions, aiming to connect with potential clients, investors, and collaborators.

Construmat also addressed one of Spain’s most pressing social challenges: the housing shortage. The event presented a ten-point action plan developed by the construction sector, proposing essential measures to be adopted by the national government, the Catalan Generalitat, and other public authorities.

Xavier Vilajoana, President of Construmat and APCEspaña, emphasized that the trade fair “has made a significant leap forward, both in its commercial offering and its congress and activities, setting the course for a more sustainable, tech-driven, and collaborative construction model.” He also highlighted the industry-wide consensus to “raise awareness of the construction sector’s role as a driver of change in addressing the urgent social issue of housing access.”

Echoing this sentiment, Construmat Director Roger Bou underlined the high calibre of attendees: “The substantial growth and cross-cutting nature of our offering have attracted highly qualified professionals focused on solving specific challenges in sustainability and energy efficiency.” Bou also noted the increase in international visitors, who now represent 13% of the total, mainly from Portugal, Italy, France, Morocco, and this year’s guest country, Turkey.

Tackling Sector Challenges Through Dialogue
Beyond its commercial component, Construmat placed strong emphasis on fostering dialogue around the major challenges facing the construction industry, while also encouraging professional networking. Over the course of three days, the event hosted 164 activities, including conferences, roundtables, workshops, and masterclasses, with 212 speakers contributing their expertise.

A particular highlight was the Sustainable Building Congress, which centred on topics such as affordable housing, health and biophilic design, and the emergence of artificial intelligence in architecture and construction. Labor shortages and the need to attract young and female talent into the sector were also key themes, addressed through dedicated sessions and the Job Marketplace, organized in collaboration with Barcelona Activa.

Additionally, the Construmat Awards, curated by the Mies van der Rohe Foundation, honored three projects built around principles of healthy and sustainable architecture: a social housing development in Ibiza by Peris+Toral Arquitectes; a children’s hospital in Zurich by Herzog & de Meuron; and a restored rural farmhouse transformed into a five-star hotel in a village in Teruel, by Edra arquitectura km0.

The next edition of Construmat will be held from May 18 to 20, 2027, at the Gran Via venue, returning to its pre-pandemic biennial schedule.
